During the long period when a society of leadership was being formed in the Nile Valley, an iconography was developing in parallel, in which the leader was represented in zoomorphic forms. This tendency changed during Naqada III, being replaced by an anthropomorphic representation, although the symbolic messages were similar. Such symbolism revolved around the establishment of order in a context in which the political boundaries of the new state were being set, a responsibility which fell to the king.
