Descripción

This paper examines the meanings and uses of Roman female jewellery during Augustan times. The article aims at a critical assessment of the ornamenta muliebria and its social function. An analysis of the archeological evidence or the literary sources shows that these necklaces, rings or bracelets had more than a decorative function. In ancient Rome, these ornamenta become a complex gender marker. They clearly indicated wealth, rank and merit, too. Specially, the ornamenta muliebria, also called ornamenta feminarum, have a specific significance in the Saeculum Augustum. We study some female garments from Carthago Nova.
