Violencia sexual, medios de comunicación y conflicto armado

The article examines the visibility given by media to sexual violence in Peru, Nicaragua,Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia. The purpose is to assess how Colombia’sarmed conflict affects the attention given by media to sexual violence, when comparedwith that given by other media outlets in Latin America. By analyzing the news articlespublished during 2012-2014, the articles probes that Colombia’s newspaper El Tiempogives greater consideration to the problem of sexual violence than that given by the othermedia outlets studied. Moreover, the article evidences that the substantial difference inmedia visibility cannot be clarified by contrasting the reality of sexual violence of the countriesselected. In the conclusion, the article underscores how Colombian women haveovercome the terrors of war and articulated their efforts for their empowerment. This inturn has generated a greater visibility to sexual violence.
