Author: Kate H. Moore This concise book is aimed at junior trainees starting to learn in the field of urogynaecology as a clear “how to do it” pocket guide. This is reflected in the lay out and style of the book which allocates individual chapters to basic steps, such as history taking, examination and investigations and describes them in simple and yet comprehensive detail, before dealing with the management of disease groups. In addition to addressing urodynamic stress incontinence, overactive bladder and genital prolapse, it covers recurrent urinary tract infection and interstitial cystitis and deals with topical issues, like outcome measures, anal incontinence and obstructive defecation. The recommendations of the International Continence Society are followed throughout the book in terms, assessment methods and management plans, illustrating to trainees how to base their learning on proper standards from the start. The book follows a simple and clear approach that is rich in detail where it deals with common practical skills and yet covers less common conditions and recent topics in a manner that is easy to understand. Discussion about management starts rightly with conservative approaches before considering complex investigations, in line with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence guidelines, and is full of practical advice. The role of urodynamic assessment is debated before describing the technique and different forms of urodynamic tests. Similarly, description of surgical procedures for continence

and prolapse is preceded by analysis of their risks and effectiveness and outline of how they evolved over the years. Modern procedures, like tape and mesh use and laparoscopic techniques, are included alongside old ones, like bladder neck buttressing and Manchester repair. The concepts of site-specific defect repair and prevention of vault prolapse are covered as well. Emphasis is given to patient counselling, postoperative care and management of complications. Anal incontinence, constipation and obstructive defecation are described in a clear and simple way that enables good understanding of various lower bowel symptoms and their investigation and management. The book represents an invaluable resource to those starting to learn urogynaecology. It is concise, yet practical and clear enough to provide a comprehensive overview before trainees can take a more detailed look at individual topics.
