Descripción

One of the biggest challenges for Public Archaeology is to integratecitizens not only as consumers of heritage, but also as active agentsin the construction of knowledge of the past. Achieving this objectiveis not without difficulties, especially in those community contexts in which a traumatic memory continues to weigh heavily. In this regard,we intend to show the strategy of outreach and scientific culture thathas guided our archaeology projects on the Spanish Civil War since2008 in different areas of the Spain (Catalonia, the Basque Country,León, Badajoz and Zaragoza). With this experience we hope tobring to the discussion a critical discourse that, although it distinctlycalls for citizen participation, it also emphasises the tensions andproblems involved: political pressures, the particular interests of localcommunities, controversies over memorials and debates as to whetherto turn war scenarios into museums or not, etc.
