These are ethnographic lines, a poem perhaps, critical reflections, or notes from observations I conducted in a Spanish-language Governor School class in a southeastern state. Governor School converges over-achieving secondary school students from across the state to attend a full summer of classes in various academic and artistic subjects. Spanish was one of them. What I observed in this class left me with a taste of wonder and some discomfort that was alleviated through writing. These lines were written by a critical language educator, a Latina in the United States, a citizen of the world who is concerned about peace, equity, the disadvantaged, and our present and future. Key words: Governor School, Spanish, immigration, debate, latin@s

He reads the Spanish dictionary. A governor’s Junior High mind in sun cotton T and green soldier shorts as if defending the cause. Ivory skin grabs purple ringed pad, and jots notes for the immigration debate with the grammar norms. My ethnographic ear searches hope. NO fronteras, NO wall, he and team were told to support. And he writes, listens, captures thoughts, takes notes. The teacher is gone. Then returns. I keep looking. The dynamics sore. Governor code-switches when Spanish-only police gets close. Back to English the teacher is gone! He believes in spontaneity his pals not quite so, they prefer to look at the notes. He seems fluent, they seem not. Latin@s absent! My brown skin notes. The debate begins. He tries in Spanish. ¿Para que fronteras? El dinero de las armas para educación de inmigrantes. And I wonder, will he wear the green soldier shorts after summer’s gone? and I leave governors behind with my Title I class in mind.
