This paper studies the representation of international leaders in the cartoons of the Spanish newspaper El País. It highlights, on the one hand, their importance as an autonomous element in the critical analysis of current issues and, on the other, the higher effectiveness conferred on  them  by  humour  perceived  as  harmless,  which  is,  in  reality,  a  powerful  alternative  for denouncing the crisis of values  shown by the contemporary political class
