We are happy to share this spring 2016 issue of the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) SIG's newsletter as it includes detailed information about our SIG's rich annual meeting program at AERA in Washington, DC this April. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at our SEL SIG sessions and Business Meeting, which will largely be devoted to a great panel presentation and discussion amongst all of us! The greeting from our Program Chairs summarizes our program's major themes this year. In the following section we would like to highlight a few of the sessions of this year's program. First, we are very pleased to be hosting a keynote invited panel presentation during our SEL SIG Business Meeting on Saturday, April 9 th from 6:15 to 8:15 pm. Drs. Roger Weissberg (University of Illinois at Chicago), John-Tyler Binfet (University of British Columbia), Debbie Moroney (AIR), Kate Zinsser (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Roisin P. Corcoran (Johns Hopkins University) will participate in this invited panel on SEL. It is titled: " Research and Evaluation in Learning: Current Achievements, Future Priorities. " We have organized the meeting so that there will be time for attendees to discuss issues raised in this panel as a group. We welcome all of you to attend our Business Meeting and to bring along any colleagues that have an interest in learning about social and emotional learning and the work of our SEL SIG. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation and discussion so there will be time to network and meet one another in an informal setting. We are also delighted to announce that the recipient of our SEL SIG's 2016 Graduate Student Award for Excellence in SEL Research is Madora Soutter from Boston University. The title of her award winning submission is "The Role of the Leader in Me in the Social-Emotional Development of Elementary Students. " This year our SIG received many very high quality first authored paper submissions from graduate students. A panel consisting of reviewers with expertise in SEL research and practice reviewed papers. Papers were reviewed with regard to the quality of the research, and its importance for future theory, research, practice and policy in the field of SEL. The award will be presented during our SEL SIG Business Meeting on Saturday, April 9 th at 6:15 pm. An abstract of Madora's paper is included in this newsletter, and we encourage you to attend the presentation of her paper on Friday April 8 th from 12 to 1:30 pm. We look forward to continuing to receive high quality and cutting edge research submissions lead by graduate students in the coming year. Please feel free to contact one of us if you would like more information on this award.
