Descripción

Saxosas vias terere. Treading Paths of Ancient Geographies (1500-1700) The seminar consists of two sessions. The first one will take as a case-study the ancient geography of the territory of western Baetica, in connection with its rediscovery by 16th- and 17th-century humanists and scholars, and the following historiographical discussion and its consequences. The second session will focus on the travels in search for antiquities, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Papers will particularly shed light on the travelers’ motives and means, and on the context of their journeys. Who travels and why? Do these travels serve as fieldwork to delimit the ancient geography of a territory? Is it used to provide evidence for one’s own scholarly production? Was there any kind of learned preparation beforehand? Is the journey employed to ‘confirm’ identities and political ideas with a historical background? In the 16th- and 17thcentury journeys, is it possible to detect the seed of the ‘antiquarian tourism’ that will arise with the Grand Tour in the Romantic era? Finally, are there different conceptions of the antiquarian travels?
