"In May 2014, Russia had over 45,000 deployed on the eastern border of Ukraine, conducting 'military exercises' and stoking fears of invasion."

This map, courtesy of the Washington Post, shows exactly which troops were involved, where they were posted, where they came from, and on what border it was they were stationed.

The conflict began…
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began with violent protests to Ukraine's backing out of The Association Agreement they had made, which in effect would bring them closer with the European Union (EU).

Instead, they reconsidered and chose to strengthen their ties with Russia.

This upset the EU and allies of, and so the protests began on November 21, 2013 on the streets of Kiev.

Russia's Annexation of Crimea
Social Influences Presentation by Brittany Taylor John-Baumgartner
Food For Thought…
Because of the strategies and intimidation that Russia used in order to gain the Ukraine's cooperation is probably the only reason that any of this happened. What is a country supposed to do when it is in jeopardy of bankruptcy, something affecting all of its citizens? Without this heavy influence, this event would have turned out much differently.

RUSSIA

President Vladimir Putin's standpoint on the annexation of Crimea was that he had right to claim the land since the majority of the population was already Russian.

The Ukraine did not agree with this however, and did not recognize the annexation.
Social Influence
"Despite vast popular support of the trade agreement with the EU, according to the International Business Times, Ukraine has ties with Russia in the form of cheap natural gas – meaning alignment with the EU could cost a quarter of its economic exports and 400,000 jobs. Not to mention Russia had cut off this supply before for political purposes in the winter of 2006.

Russia's pressure on Ukraine led to an agreement between Vladimir Putin and President Yanukovych that would slash gas prices sold to Ukraine. It also ensures Russia's purchasing $15bn of Ukraine government bonds, according to EuroNews.

According to the BBC, this controversial aid agreement, though frowned upon by many, will strategically help Ukraine avoid bankruptcy" ("Ukraine Center", 2013).

The Languages of Ukraine
Understanding that President Putin wants nothing but the best protection for his people, what puzzles me still is the fact that his people were never in any danger while living in Crimea as part of the Ukraine, yet he seems to blatantly expect it to be politically and socially acceptable for him to put Ukraine's people in harm's way to annex his. This is not fair in the slightest, and the fact that Putin has all of Russia to back him isn't either.

("COURIOUSMATIC", N.D.)

Russian military took over airports, stores, patrolled the streets and broke up any kind of potential threatening gathering, injuring and killing so many Ukrainians in the process. There was no reason prior to their unnecessary brute force.

I do not think that Russia thought to much on the matter before deciding to take things into action violently due to all of the support that Ukraine gained from the US, Canada, Africa, parts of Asia, parts of South America, Australia and even parts of Europe after going back on the deal to join and become part of the European Union. Russia is very large and has a more than equipt army to support their decisions, but that is all that they have. Obama even threatened Russia with sanctions if the continued on due to the unfairness to Ukraine.

Resolution Reached?
"After a long night of negotiations on 2/20/14, a political deal was signed on Friday the 21st by both the president and opposition representatives, agreeing to put end to the bloody crisis.

The deal will restore the nation's 2004 Constitution and make reforms that, when complete, will lead to new elections held no later than December 2014. Illegal weapons will be handed over, acts of violence will be investigated, and protestors will step down from their occupied spaces" ("Curiousmatic, n.d.).
