SEÑORES CONTRA CAMPESINOS. CAMPESINOS CONTRA SEÑORES. LOS PUERTOS CONCEJILES EN LA BASE DE LA CONFLICTIVIDAD ANTISEÑORIAL EN LA MONTAÑA LEONESA (SIGLOS XV-XIX)

Changes to the jurisdiction in the mountains of León, whereby villages passed from direct control by the monarchy to control by local nobility, provoked a series of legal confrontations between the General Councils and the successive Dukes of Luna.  At first, opposition to the nobility focused on the legitimacy of the royal grant, but the subject of mountain passes quickly became the central issue of the litigation.  The importance of these areas, used as summer pastures, resided in the economic benefits they generated each year.  It is in this context that the evolution of this social unrest throughout the Modern Era is analyzed, together with its consequences.
