Science in brazilian commemorative postage stamps: 1900-2000 / A ciência nos selos postais comemorativos brasileiros: 1900-2000.

Guided by theoretical and methodological principles of Communication, Science Communication and Language, with emphasis on discoursive genres, it was possible to verify how the stamps contribute and participate in the domain of scientific discourse. It was also explored the debates about science and technology, its historical and conceptual values and their representations. The bibliographic review allowed the comprehension, through a historical and social view, about the characteristics of the production, distribution and circulation of this artifact, in addition to the determination of its constitutive elements. In the research 2354 commemorative postage stamps, issued by the Brazilian state between 1900 and 2000, were identified through both the RHM and Scott Catalogs. From this universe, 104 stamps formed the expanded sample, based in a proposed categorization of its verbal and pictorial elements. Finally, four stamps composed the restricted sample, in which was made a critical and methodological analysis. The research found that the postage stamp, as well as other media, disseminates science and contributes to the construction of a scientific culture, in addition to an indication of theoretical and technical criteria of the postage stamp status.Book published in 2011 by Pernambuco's Federal University Press as a result of my Master research about popularization and communication of science.
