OVERVIEW

Rural Fun School Project is initiated to introduce early childhood education program in Ulu Padawan community. The program was initiated in late 2014 as a mission to reduce illiteracy rate among the Ulu Padawan Community. Due to poor financial support it was halted and kept in view. The target group of the project is children from 5 to 7 years old.

ABOUT ULU PADAWAN COMMUNITY

Ulu Padawan community is mostly Bidayuh Indigenous native covering about 25 villagers. The Ulu Padawan community is numbered from Kampung Annah Rais to Kampung Sibekar up to Kampung Tepoi and covering Kampung Abang Bura until Kampung Sapit and Kampung Kiding. They are situated at about 75 KM from Kuching town to Borneo Highland Resort. There are several dialect spoken differently among the community. The Bi’ Annah speaks Bi’Annah dialect, and the Tebiya (covering Kampung Abang until Kampung Kiding and Kampung Sapit) speak Tebiya dialect.

Their economic activity is shifting cultivation and farming and the youngsters resided mostly in town and some are working in peninsular Malaysia and overseas. The overall per capita income is measured approximately RM 300.00. 5 percent of the community is working in the government offices and the rest are working as labor. Almost 15 percent of the Ulu Padawan community are working in Johore as factory operator and the rest are scatting around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor due to push factors; job opportunity, wage and competition.

There is only one Secondary school to cater the enormous amount of students from upper Padawan areas. The school is SMK. Padawan located at KM 40, Old Padawan Road and six primary schools namely SK. Kambug, SK. Panglakan Ampat, SK. St. Philip Padawan, SK. St. Bernard Sadir, SK. Pelaman Dunuk and SK. St. James Rayang. All the schools are under the administration of Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Padawan. Less attention to early childhood education such

as kindergarten has brought to slow learning process in primary schools and some gave up due to demotivation. There are no access to early childhood education except one at Kampung Semuti, initiated by the church and foreign donors.

WHY RURAL FUN SCHOOL PROJECT?

The high number of illiteracy among the Ulu Padawan community has been identified as the core factor to poverty. The vision of the project is to reduce illiteracy among the community to zero illiteracy by 2020.

No access to kindergarten due to geographical and economic factors has been identified as main issue in providing early childhood education to the children. Our mission is to create the program (Rural Fun School) to the community by giving financial support and learning materials and run the class at community halls twice a week. It will be a continuous effort by all parties to ensure that the program will be continuing on and expanding to other villages.

HOW IT WORKS?

4.1

Target Group The target group for the project is children aged 5-7 years old.

4.2

Demographic The project will be initiated at Ulu Padawan Area where there is no access to kindergarten.

4.3

Resources The “teachers” will be the secondary school students who have good command in English. The “teachers” will be given “allowance” based on the hours of class conducted. The children will be given stationaries and picture book to learn.

The class room can be the community hall (Balai Raya) or Churches Sunday School or Surau.

Modules There are only two subjects to be conducted which are English and Bahasa Malaysia. It is suggested that the class will be held every Friday night and Saturday night or Saturday morning, 2 hours each session. The class can be singing, games and any other fun method of learning. There is no formal module as this is not a formal school but only a fun school to expose children to basic learning.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? You can involve in this project as volunteer or donor to support this project. Items to be donated are picture dictionary, writing books, pencil, crayons and other appropriate learning material for children 5-7 years old.

6.0

WHAT WILL WE DO? We will create a bank account under the name Rural Fun School Project to enable donors to contribute monetary donation and material can be donated to volunteers involved and will be delivered to Kuching. We will work closely with community leaders and parent to make this project run smoothly without any complicated understanding.

Financial report will be produced every month to donors and volunteers to serve transparency and integrity of the project. Committee members will be formed locally to “manage” the project and every activity will be reported from time to time when necessary.

OUR PILOT PROJECT

Fun School project was introduced in Kampung Semuti in 2012 under the Church support. The building was built by community labor (gotong royong) and the building materials were donated by individuals. The school opens 5 days a week under the observation of two teachers. There are currently 20 children attending the school covering 3 villagers namely Kampung Semuti, Sebuang and Sibekar. This is the only successful fun school project in Ulu Padawan and there is not such initiated project ever in any other village.

OUR HOPE We hope that by introducing the Fun School Project we will be able to have permanent building for the children to have class with conducive environment and adequate learning material. We wish that the children will be given simple breakfast or meal before class since most of the children came from hardcore poor family with less food at home.

OUR VISION We will have 10 units of rural fun schools to be built in Ulu Padawan by 2024 and will be expanded to other rural area in Sarawak.

OUR MISSION Our Mission is to get involve in volunteering work or involved as donors to help us to run the Rural Fun school project.

By helping in Rural un School Project we will help the community in Ulu Padawan to reduce illiteracy rate that had led to hardcore poverty.

11.0 SUMMARY Ulu Padawan Community has the highest number of hardcore poor families due high illiteracy rate among the community. The best way to eradicate poverty is to provide good education as a basic tool to better job opportunity and skill. Therefore, Rural Fun School Project is introduced to lay out basic education for children at low cost to prepare the children for formal education in Primary School.
