Abstract of the thesis This research project aims to study how painting fits into architecture of the High Renaissance in Rome (1500-1530 and beginnings from 1480s). Wall decorations of this mature Renaissance into the center of artistic creation and Christianity should be understood as “relationships’ systems” which stage the representation. Then the main issues focus on the frame as threshold that joins the (fictional) space of the representation and the (real) space of the viewer. This frescoes of the High Renaissance Roman body of work has already been studied many times. They were mainly confined to the iconographic and stylistic innovations, at the expense of variation and variety of framework’s device, yet determinative for the message conveyed by the representation and its effects on the viewer. From an interdisciplinary perspective, it will rely on recent research about, on the one hand, the Intermediality’s question mainly applied to contemporary media and, on the other hand, about the frame principally studied for Mannerist and Baroque ages. This research therefore aims to shed a new light on this body of work through a marginal approach towards the traditional history of art and upon the margins of representation. The underlying intention is indeed to highlight the relationship between painting and architecture and its frame issues that have partly laid the groundwork for what is going to happen in the Mannerist and Baroque arts, which are usually considered as periods where earliest forms of transgression of representation’s limits appear to set up the early modern period.
