Descripción

Writers are cheap: in the cultural market, a bit of money and prestige goes very far. The same goes for academics. Yet standard histories of literature and ideas rarely acknowledge the central role played by the agencies that help shape intellectual production through the targeted distribution of financial and cultural capital: publishers, foundations, corporations and national governments—not to mention the latter’s covert branches, from the Communist International and the ComInform to MI5 and the CIA. Somehow it has taken historians of culture a while to catch on to journalists’ basic rule: always follow the money.
