RELIGIÓN, FAMILIA, Y SPANGLISH: LA CIUDAD TRADUCIDA EN LOS REYES DEL MAMBO CANTAN CANCIONES DE AMOR DE OSCAR HIJUELOS

The U.S. Latino/a production has reached out a meaningfulrelevance during the last 25 years. However, the interactionbetween city and individual into this corpus has beenscarcely studied. The present research attempts to contributeto the exploration of this quandary, analyzing the urbanenvironment portrayed in The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love by Oscar Hijuelos. According to Wirth-Nesher, in thisnovel New York City is read as a translated city. Toward thishypothesis, an analysis of Latino identity as a cellular entityis articulated that follows the cultural practices at the core ofit: religion, family, and language. Their interaction and roleas mechanisms of the translated city drawn by Hijuelos arealso studied.Key words: City – U.S. Latino/a Literature – New York Cityand Literature – Latino identity – Oscar Hijuelos.La producción cultural latina en los Estados Unidos haalcanzado una significativa importancia en los últimosveinticinco años. Sin embargo, la interacción entre ciudad eindividuo ha sido poco estudiada en dicho corpus. Estainvestigación pretende contribuir a la exploración de estaproblemática, analizando el entorno urbano presente en LosReyes del Mambo cantan canciones de amor de OscarHijuelos. Se propone que New York City es leída en este textocomo una ciudad traducida, en términos de Wirth-Nesher. Entorno a esta hipótesis, se articula el análisis de la identidadlatina en base a una estructura de tipo celular, discutiendo lasprácticas culturales que confirman su núcleo: Religión,Familia e Idioma.
