Recitativo de salao: apresentando um genero luso-brasileiro

The author has been working on a number of Brazilian compositions known generically as recitatives and which, unlike the operatic type, are salon pieces for piano and spoken word. Various examples are to be found in Brazilian archives. However, further research has revealed that this genre was also cultivated in Portugal, which had its own output. The present paper aims to present this unknown Luso-Brazilian genre, placing it alongside the modinha and lundu, and to give a glimpse of the diversity and multiplicity of home music-making.
