Promoting Sustainable Environmental Education through Socio-Cultural Values in Africa

In Africa there is a high dependence on biological resources for survival. Consequently, it is expedient to evolve a means of managing natural resources in a sustainable manner. This paper identified the inadequacy of western model of conservation in the management of natural environment in Africa. It puts in perspective that the African traditional indigenous systems for environment management were appropriate and culture-based. It suggested a system of education packaged within the framework of this indigenous coping strategy that enjoys a higher degree of flexibility and will facilitate understanding of modern and western model of environmental management.
