The presence, distribution, and alternate plant hosts of pepper huasteco virus (PHV) and texas pepper virus-variant Tamaulipas (TPV-T), in Central Mexico, specifically in the states of Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí and Jalisco, were determined by the use of molecular methods (Southern and PCR). The virus most frequently detected in the samples analyzed was PHV, with 70% of positive reactions, followed by TPV-T with 19%, and 11% to the mixture of both geminiviruses. It was found no reaction to CdTV (Chino del tomate virus) out of the 266 samples analyzed. Sixteen plant species were identified as alternate hosts for PHV and TPV-T; the most important were papaya (Carica papaya), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), johnson grass (Sorghum halepense), and paradise (Melia azedarach).
