Until few years ago, the situation of Greek peasantry had received scarce attention, since the his-torians had privileged the study of slavery, even when it was known that the bulk of population had continued subsisting starting from the own work on the land, out of the slave system. It was understandable since an extended consent existed around the ancient world was based on slave exploitation. The above produced a relegation of peasant studies, without it was perceived that the chattel-slavery even was a historical derivation of rural communities’ social dynamics. But the new historiographic developments have produced substantial changes in our understanding of the Hellenic rural history, which requires a systematic disposition of acquired knowledge and outlined problems. This article tries to carry out an analysis that allows developing a critical perspective around these topics, combining the historical and historiographical readings with the theoretical and methodological ones. The proposal consists on approaching diverse aspects related with the rural world in the ancient Greece according to the new points of view, analyzing the specific forms of peasantry’s social, economic and cultural life and its relationships with the political sphere and military activity of the Greek city-state.
