Part 1 Extra Credit POS 3443 Political Parties (& Elections) Professor Shastri Summer B 2016 This Extra Credit (EC) assignment comes with a maximum of 30 points. If you were able to receive all 30 points, it would boost your Final Grade for the Semester by 5%, so if you finished with 510/600 = 85% a B, you would have 540/600, a 90% an A-. This EC assignment is two parts; Part 1 is about analyzing 3 separate op-eds, which focuses on how the Republican Party has problems with some white voter groups, which for here is Secular Whites, Highly Educated Whites, & Urban Whites (I don’t deny there is overlap as I often say in these articles). Each group is covered in a separate op-ed. DIRECTIONS: FOCUS ON DONALD TRUMP AND EACH OF THESE 3 WHITE VOTER GROUPS. MAKE A CASE THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO WIN BACK SOME VOTES OF 1 OF THESE 3 GROUPS IN COMPARISON TO PREVIOUS REPUBLICANS. THEN MAKE A CASE HE LIKE MOST REPUBLICANS WILL REMAIN DOING POORLY WITH 1 OF THESE 3 GROUPS. LASTLY, MAKE A CASE, HE WILL DO FAR WORSE WITH ONE OF THESE 3 GROUPS THAN PREVIOUS REPUBLICANS EVER HAVE. YOU CAN’T PICK ANY WHITE VOTER GROUP MORE THAN ONCE. I REALIZE THAT SOME OF YOU HAVE STRONG AND SAME OPINIONS ON ALL THREE. THE PURPOSE HERE IS TO IMPROVE SKILLS ON LOOKING AT POLITICS FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES. OBVIOUSLY, IT’S YOUR CHOICE AS TO WHICH ARTICLE MATCHES WHICH OF THESE 3 VIEWS. YOUR ANALYSIS IS SCORED 5 POINTS EACH ARTICLE FOR A TOTAL OF 15 POINTS. Each of your pieces should be 150-300 words, but have them all in one file for a total of 450-900 words. You must base your view on what is written on each op-ed, but you can also bring in outside information to strengthen your position.
