Mineral adalah suatu zat yang berbentuk padat yang terjadi secara alamiah dengan suatu komposisi kimia tertentu dan memiliki susunan atom yang teratur, biasanya terbentuk secara anorganik.
Batuan Beku atau sering disebut igneous rocks adalah batuan yang terbentuk dari satu atau beberapa mineral dan terbentuk akibat pembekuan dari magma.

KLASIFIKASI MINERAL PEMBENTUK BATUAN
Mineral Utama (Essensial mineral) : mineral ini terbentuk langsung dari kristalisasi magma (mineral mafik dan mineral felsic).

Mineral Tambahan (Accessory mineral) : mineral yang terbentuk oleh kristalisasi magma terdapat dalam jumlah yang sedikit (kurang dari 5%). kehadirannya tidak menentukan nama batuan.

Mineral Sekunder (Secondary mineral) : mineral-mineral ubahan dari mineral utama, dapat dari hasil pelapukan,reaksi hidrotermal, maupun metamorfisme terhadap mineral utama.

PENGGOLONGAN MINERAL BERDASAR WARNA
Kelompok mineral terang (felsic) banyak mengandung unsur Aluminium (Al) Kalsium (Ca), Natrium (Na), Kalium (K) dan Silisium (Si)
Kelompok mineral gelap (mafic) mengandung banyak unsur Magnesium (Mg) dan Besi (Fe).
