Descripción

Caves in clay are uncommon worldwide. Its genesis is of interest in Karstology by occur by piping processes in unconsolidated materials and poorly soluble rocks. However, in the region of Las Bardenas there are a high number of cavities in clay, including some of the largest known cave systems in this lithology. In this paper we present data on piping processes occurring in Holocene clays in a sector of the plain of the Bardena Blanca, and which are closely associated with the formation and evolution of gullies and small canyons. Around this dendrite network of embedded gullies, thousands of arches and rock bridges, tunnels, chasms and caves in clay are formed, generally of scarce development. The underground drainage has as local base level the bottom of the gullies. Proliferation of piping caves at different levels on the walls of the ravines in turn contributes to eroding headward of epigeous drainage network, generating morphology of badlands, with depressions, potholes and collapses, often in continuity. The paper describes and illustrates the examples found.
