M. lonae prevailingly inhabits xerothermous woodlands, although it occurs also within open xerothermous sites and peat bogs (SEIFERT, 2000). Both colonies were found under rocks on xerothermous grassland slope close to the forest edge. The forest consisted mainly of Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris. M. lonae occurred together with few dominant ant species, mainly Myrmica sabuleti Meinert, 1861, Formica gagates Latreille, 1798, Lasius emarginatus (Olivier, 1792) and Leptothorax unifasciatus (Latreille, 1798).
