MUSIC SCENES IN PORTO ALEGRE Cidade Baixa Felipe, Gabriela, Giovana e Jonas

STARTING POINT Considering someone’s who just arrived in Porto Alegre point of view of not knowing the city, but willing to go out at night, and asking advice for where to go to get musical entertainment.

Where can he or she have a good time?

Where can he or she have a good time? Cidade Baixa would probably be the answer. So our friend goes there and starts wandering in the streets trying to find places to have some fun.

VENUES The first part of the tour is Sobrado – Bolicho Cervejeiro, a bar where he can chat and have some beer and food. From there he goes searching for a place with music to “start the night”.

VENUES

PERSPECTIVE Our concern was about the circulation of music in a well known neighborhood for bars, concerts and related.

METHODOLOGY We started as what Charles Baudelaire call as “flâneur”:

METHODOLOGY We started as what Charles Baudelaire call as “flâneur”: Walking/strolling in the city, to experience it, looking at the window shops, just wandering with intelligence, without an accurate objective.

AFTER ALL THIS If our friend, from the beggining of this presensation, is tired, drunk or just don’ t want to leave Cidade Baixa:

AFTER ALL THIS

Perimetral Lanches

WHAT HAVE WE FOUND Cidade Baixa is an eclectic neighborhood: there is music for all kinds of taste. Once, as an interviewed said, MPB and samba predominated, but today it appears to share an equal place with rock (or even taking its place). Also, dance halls who used to be in other parts of the city had recently come to Cidade Baixa. We found places with both genres MPB and rock.

WHAT HAVE WE FOUND For musicians, it appeared that covers were most wanted. In Paraphernália, for example, the manager said they did have a day (on Tuesdays) for what is called “authorial” music (which means artist not famous or in the industry), but it doesn’t happen anymore. The radio is hidden from the squares (there is not even an outdoor or a board with its name on it). Something related to the places described by Sara Cohen in Liverpool. Cidade Baixa is not a safe place right now during the late night, according to a Marcio, that have been working since 14 years old at this kind of job.

WHAT HAVE WE FOUND Socio-economic aspects: It’s a neighborhood with various prices, but not the most expensives in the city. The places we went had no entrance tickets or tickets that didn’t reach R$20,00. Cidade Baixa is accessible by bus, bicycles and cars, and is near downtown.

thank you! :)
