Historically Tabasco has, suffered high rates of natural habitat destruction due to its conversion into cattle pastures and extensive agricultural lands. However, great surfaces of wetlands remain relatively undisturbed thanks to the hydrological complexity of the state. These contrasting habitat conditions favored the survival of numerous wild mammals. In order to determine the number of mammal species in Tabasco, as well as to define their problems of conservation and management, we conducted an intensive search of literature in bibliographical sources and electronic databases, in which we obtained information on the presence of different mammal species in the state, and classified the conservation and management problems reported. We obtained records of 152 species of mammals, from which 53 are catalogued at risk by Mexican law. We found that many of the mammal species have reduced their population sizes due to habitat loss and fragmentation (even in Natural Protected Areas, NPA), urbanization, unregulated hunting and disease transmission. In addition, it has been reported that wild mammals in the state are associated with the occurrence of zoonoses, as well as conflicts with livestock. Conservation and management of mammals in Tabasco will depend on the implementation of adequate strategies to enable habitat conservation (even outside NPAs) and enforcement of Wildlife Management Units (UMA). The recent increase in the number of papers published about mammals in the state offers an opportunity for a better understanding, use and conservation of wild mammals in the state. Resumen.
