Descripción

This work provides a diagnostic of the main priorities and needs for the integrated conservation of native mammals of Guanajuato and proposes an update on its nomenclature. The state's mastofauna comprises 93 species of 20 families mostly Rodentia, Chiroptera and Carnivora. The main biogeographic affinities of the state mammalian fauna are the Mexican High Plateau, the Sierra Madre Oriental and, to a lesser degree, the Bajio region and the Mexican Neovolcanic Belt. Four aspects of conservation status were considered: a) risk of species, from global to national, b) official status of species in México, c) endemicity to Guanajuato, and d) applicable international regulations. A matrix was analyzed, 20 focal species were selected and allocated to strategic priority categories: I Highest priority, II High priority, and III Medium priority; fourth category comprises extirpated species from Guanajuato. A study was conducted on species, vegetation, protected areas, registered Management Units for Wildlife Conservation (UMA), and exotic species. Native vegetation in the state is highly affected by agriculture, livestock, urban and industrial areas, and roads, even though Guanajuato has 24 natural protected areas (NPA), 23 state and one federal representing 20% of the state territory. Most records of focal species relate only to one or two natural protected areas (NPA), mainly in the Sierra Gorda. Habitat type coverage by NPA appears insufficient and the areas are not well interconnected. Two large NPA had statistically fewer focal species recorded than expected on the basis of
