Benito Arias Montano in 1552, Juan de Santacruz Cárcamo in 1553 and Diego de Guevara in 1554 were the first poets officially laureated in Spain in the contest held at the University of Alcala de Henares. We analyze the conditions of the contest, the draft of one of the poems presented by Montano, and the poems presented by Santacruz with which they obtained the laurea, as well as other features concerning the poetry of these authors.
