Death was a strictly everyday fact that, because of its uncertain nature, was likely to provoke fear in societies throughout the Early Modern Age. Depictions of the afterlife or rituals that surrounded the act of death and which were so often reflected in treatise of "dying well", were attempts to insert the inexorable spectrum of death within the confines of the Catholic religion. Therefore, people of all conditions, so identified with this fact since chilhood, lived surrounded by a series of objects and daily ceremonies that were designed to make death more understandable and to include it within the reality of Catholicsm.
