Descripción

This is an analysis of the contests of Latin poetry in Alcala de Henares, Salamanca and Seville between 1531 and 1575. The author deals with the promoters of these contests, their social and political implications, the contestants, the judges, the literary genres and extent of the poems, the prizes and their winners. He provides some criteria to judge the quality of these poems and the literary skills and knowledge of ancient authors of their authors. He explains how these contests are intended to spread the humanistic values, to promote the best poets, and to give fame to the patrons of the contests. The contests of Seville are the oldest ones, while those of Alcala de Henares are more prestigious, and those of Salamanca the best and more expensive prizes.
