Printed checklists of species of fishes from a given basin, region or country have an important limitation, since for a group whose taxonomic diversity is not yet fully documented, its validity in most cases is limited and shortly after addition of newly described species, these checklists become immediately outdated. In the particular case of the biodiversity of freshwater fishes from Venezuela (one of the largest in the continent), the checklist produced in 2004 recorded 1198 species. This number changed almost immediately after being published that work. That same year six new species were described from Venezuela. Until January of 2015, 117 additional species have been described. An alternative to the obsolescence of printed checklists is its publication on the internet. This webpage is continuously revised and updated to keep up the taxonomic knowledge of the Venezuelan freshwater fish fauna.
