There have been numerous studies on comics focused on reading and writing in basic education. In Colombia, only one research project has been carried out with comics in the field of university education. This research proposes to legitimize socio-cultural practices of reading and writing with comics in the higher education, under a pedagogical perspective of non-formal education. To this end, a group of undergraduate students from the Universidad de Antioquia was gathered within a theoretical and practical laboratory-workshop environment, in two classrooms for reading and studying comics (a conference room) and creating comics (a drawing classroom), for a period of 120 hours. Research shows that environments for reading and writing comics have an educational value, and train adults in critical reading skills as well as in verbal and visual composition. Similarly, the non-formal environment allows the emergence of a functional pedagogical and didactic model that generates motivation and voluntary commitment towards discipline and knowledge. Ultimately, this research reconstructs, in a biographical narrative, the experience with comics at the Universidad de Antioquia and the creation of an academic community around comics, which contributes to the legitimacy of comics in the university context and allows future research scenarios.Keywords: comics, higher education, sociocultural practices, reading, writing, non-formal
