More than one of every four high school students finishes their school attendance without overcoming the basic level of academic competence (INEE, 2016), which takes a large deficit of knowledge and skills necessary to deal with success future challenges. This fact acquires special pedagogic attention because there are too many pupils that are immersed in an increasing-low performance spiral and lack of scholar motivation. In addition, the risk of leaving the school increases when pupils do not perform the levels legally required.Factors linked to low performance and the risk of school failure or early school leaving, include weak training in non-cognitive skills. Also known as social or emotional skills, they have shown to have an influence in academic performances and in the possibility of educational and work success. However, there is poor knowledge about what works to promote these skills at school. As a result of the previously mentioned, the goal of our study is to go in depth into the understanding of the non-cognitive knowledge by drafting a theoretical proposal and concerning three basic dimensions of skills which are related to motivation, learning strategies, and finally, commitment in the action. From this proposal, it has been elaborated a non-cognitive skills measure‟s instrument to get information that has allowed us to subject the goals of our work empirically. The results obtained have allowed us to establish a relationship between low performance and the deficit in some non-cognitive skills. This study finishes with the discussion of the results and the raise of new queries for future investigation projects.
