Descripción

This document describes the history and consequences of gold mining of alluvial and vein deposits in two regions of the Colombian Amazon in the voice of an indigenous Yucuna woman who has lived through and experienced different periods and aspects of the extractive economy. The first part of the testimony focuses on the rise, decline, and subsequent effects of the gold rush that emerged in the 1980s in the mountains of Taraira located in the southern department of Vaupes. The second relates the history of alluvial mining in Caqueta, Putumayo, and Cotuhé rivers in the department of Amazonas over the last fifteen years, and also examines the sector's close links with the armed conflict in that region. The paper concludes with a call to action for state authorities and leaders of indigenous organizations aimed at preventing the harmful consequences of mining in indigenous territories in the Amazon.
