La identidad y la defensa, tanto de la autonomía como de la autoctonía, se han constituido como procesos clave para la formación cultural a lo largo de la Historia y, en especial, en la Antigüedad. Los atenienses defendieron siempre con orgullo su ascendencia, la legitimidad para ocupar su territorio y su preeminencia sobre el resto de los griegos. Para argumentarlo, uno de los acontecimientos más importantes relacionados con ello fue su victoria frente al ataque que las mitológicas amazonas. El conflicto no solo estaba relacionada con el ámbito guerrero, sino que sus dimensiones alcanzaron aspectos políticos, religiosos, culturales, etc. convirtiéndose en un símbolo imperecedero.
