A steam-thermolysis process to recover carbon fibers from CFRP waste

The Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) it's a high performance materials and made from 70% resin thermoset matrix. Recycling CFRP wastes currently offers interesting economic and environmental perspectives. There are two main recycling process enable for carbon fiber recovery : pyrolysis and steam thermolysis.

Pyrolisis is a based on the organix matrix thermal degradation, and steam thermolysis is a process thermochemical using superheated steam at environmental pressure to degrade the organic matrix composite and recover the carbon fiber.

For recycling carbon fiber was conducted in bench scale reactor and previous made composite sample are treated by the steam thermolysis process so as to reclaim carbon fiber. The composite sample will be analyze with thermogravimetric analyzer.

The following comparison between pyrolysis and steam thermolysis against removal resin and tensile strength is :

Based on thermogravic analyzer, the organic matrix more degraded with steam thermolysis than pyrolisis, and the activation energy for steam thermolysis lower than with pyrolisis.

Epicirol is biobased Epichlorohydrin (ECH) produce from glycerol and glycerol is renewable feedstock and by product from biodiesel and oleochemical productions. The ECH based on glycerol offers environmental advantages compared to the ECH based on from propylene.

The advantages of epicerol is 100% renewable carbon, 61% global warming potential reduction, 57% less energy consumption. The advantages for process production epicerol is lower water , lower chlorine input, minimal water effluent and minimal chlorinated by product.

Epicerol is chemical intermediate mainly used in the production of epoxy resin, and the epoxy applications include paint and coating, composite, electronic component, and adhehesive. Non-epoxy applications include paper chemical, water treatment, and surfactant.

It is essential, for the future not just for the economy but for the whole of mankind, that sustainable eco-friendly manufacturing methods are developed. Cradle to cradle it is the framework seeks to create production techniques there are not just efficient but are essentially waste free.

In cradle to cradle production all material inputs and outputs are seen either as technical or biological nutrients. Technical nutrients can be recycled or reused with no loss of quality and biological nutrients composted or consumed. By contrast cradle to grave refers to a company taking responsibility for the disposal of goods it has produced, but not necessarily putting products' constituent components back into service.

Approach the composite design based on cradle to cradle framework:
Eliminate toxic material
Have assembly in mind separate biological and technical nutrients.

The conclusions of conferences with eco- design and recycling program is to encourage us to turn to the material , design , and proper process , in order to reduce the waste generated from the production process. By selecting the material , design , and the right process , environment is expected to be maintained.
