Technological InnovaQon Family Management
Does family management moderate the posiQve expected influence of the existence of technological innovaQon on long-term performance? Diéguez-Soto, Manzaneque, Rojo-Ramírez (2016). Family Business Review
Variables
R&D intensity. It has been measured as R&D expenditure to total sales income. Following previous studies we used a lagged expression of the variable (R&Dt-1) (e.g. Liang, et al., 2013). Family-managed firm. ParQcularly, we follow the definiQon of Kotlar et al. (2014) considering both family ownership and family involvement in top management to build a binary measurement of family managed firm.

Variables
ConSnuous technological innovaSon. Specifically, we defined a categorical variable from 0 to 3 by accumulaQon of technological innovaQon for the years t, t+1 and t+2. So, conQnuous technological innovaQon variable takes the following values: CTI=0, there isn’t any kind of technological innovaQon; CTI=1, there is product innovaQon or process innovaQon or both in one year in a three-year period; CTI=2, there are product innovaQon and process innovaQon or both in two years in a threeyear period; and, CTI=3, there are product innovaQon and process innovaQon or both in three years in a three-year period. Long-Term firms’ performance: In this study, performance is measured by the return on assets (ROA) widely supported in the literature on family firms (Rutherford & Holt, 2008) and innovaQon in family firms (e.g. Schepers, Voordeckers, Steijvers & Laveren, 2014). Long- term performance is the mean return on assets in a three-years period (t, t+1 and t+2).

Technological InnovaSon Inputs, Outputs and Performance: the moderaSng role of Family Involvement in Management
• The preservation of socioemotional wealth seems to be particularly high among those family firms that are family managed (Block, et al., 2013) and can be used to explain paradoxical effects in family firm innovation. • - - - - -
Socioemotional wealth Dimensions: Family control and influence Indentification of Family members with the firm Binding social ties (stakeholders) Emotional attachment of family members Renewal of family bonds to the firm through dynastic succesion

Technological InnovaSon Inputs, Outputs and Performance: the moderaSng role of Family Involvement in Management
• Paradox: Family firms have superior ability (discretion to act) to innovate yet lower willingness (disposition to act) to do so (Chrisman, Chua, De Massis, Frattini and Wright, 2014).

Does family management moderate the posiSve expected influence of R&D intensity on the existence of conSnuous technological innovaSon? • Family managed firms orientation to preserve the affective endowment (more risk averse) • their opposition to constrain family managers ability to exercise their discretion to act because of conceding control to external capital (this would restrict their shareholder voting power -as family owners- and also limit the attitude of their managerial actions and decisions -as managers-, Diéguez-Soto, Manzaneque, Rojo-Ramírez (2016). Family Business Review
Does family management moderate the posiSve expected influence of R&D intensity on the existence of conSnuous technological innovaSon? • and their lack of executive talent (nepotism, altruism, untalented and unmerited family members,…) seem to hamper the obtaining of regularly acts of technological innovation, that is, the attainment of continuous technological innovation.

Does family management moderate the posiSve expected influence of the existence of technological innovaSon on longterm performance? Family managed firms, being more orientated to pursuing family-oriented goals, may be aware that, not wagering decidedly from the results of technological innovation to obtain long-term performance efficiently might endanger their socioemotional wealth (Gomez-Mejia et al., 2007). They become riskier than they would otherwise have been and put all their resources to work on making a minimum return from the investment and to protect family over the long run. Once the firm has decided to adopt a technological innovation, they decide strategically to go ahead and behave more riskily than in other circumstances and their high discretion decreases the obstacles to the integration of technological innovation in its current operations, in the long term.
Diéguez-Soto, Manzaneque, Rojo-Ramírez (2016). Family Business Review
Does family management moderate the posiSve expected influence of the existence of technological innovaSon on longterm performance?
Furthermore, their great discretion to direct, allocate, add to and dispose of a firm’s resources to decrease the barriers to the integration of the technological innovation into its existing operations, increases the likelihood of accomplishing appropriate long-term performance from the achievement of technological innovation, protecting better their socioemotional wealth (GomezMejia et al., 2011).

Technological InnovaSon Inputs, Outputs and Performance: the moderaSng role of Family Involvement in Management In short, this study suggests making an important disQncQon regarding the role that family management exerts on both c o m p o n e n t s a ff e c Q n g t e c h n o l o g i c a l innovaQon efficiency (the impact of R&D on conQnuous technological innovaQon and the influence of technological innovaQon on long-term performance): Family managed firms are less likely to produce con1nuous technological innova1on from R&D expenses whereas for the obtaining of long-term performance from the occurrence of technological innova1on, the opposite seems to be true.
