Including Social Responsibility into curricula
Aravali Institute of Management (AIM) is a 20 year old institution based in western part of India. The mission statement of AIM says that, "we will create responsible future managers who are sensitive to the social and dynamic environment with a global sustainable outlook". However they are currently not doing anything special in this regard. They offer all functional courses such as. marketing, finance, operations etc.
In last board of governors meeting, AIM decided to go for international accreditation e. g. AACSB. Dean Dr. Kaila was given responsibility to understand the AACSB accreditation process and related requirements. So that institute can chalk out its strategy. Professor Kaila attended some related trainings, interacted with top schools around the world and communicated to the board members that now that sustainability is included in the criteria of accrediting associations, such as AACSB Therefore, is incumbent on school to ensure that their faculty have the necessary expertise to teach in this area.
She also communicated that more course have to be introduced focusing on integrating topics such as sustainability, microfinance, poverty and social responsibility related areas throughout curricula. Dr. Kaila concluded her point that many business schools are viewing this as nonnegotiable components of doing business today. In light of this, board of governors decided to include this aspect into their curricula.
