Awo Popoola’s omo awo is Jose Rodriguez of Phoenix, Arizona. Omo means student or in training. Omo awo Jose is also Awo Popoola’s publisher as well as translator. Today I want to speak to the ICIR and inform my Lucumi brothers and sisters on my opinions. First and foremost the ICIR is a Nigeria based organization not a Lucumi organization. ICIR’s members and hierarchy is not Lucumi it is Nigerian and Benin based Traditional IFA. ICIR and Traditional IFA seek to add Latinos and Latino ile. Awo Popoola and omo awo Jose are friends of mine, yet I am opposed to this overly ambitious council (ICIR), its structure, its hierarchy and many of its objectives. I personally see it as a power grab that seeks to usurp well established hierarchy in The Diaspora; such as The Commission in Cuba. I disagree vehemently that there is one IFA, because there are many. Only the under educated and those seeking to consolidate power deny this. We can look inside Nigeria and differences between Ife and Oyo or the female IFA priest in ode remo to confirm this; in fact there are dozens of examples of differences within Yoruba Land. Move to The Diaspora and there are even more. It would be prudent if Nigerian IFA left us in the Diaspora alone; but like a Christian Evangelist or Muslim

they keep trying to convert us or build a hierarchy over us, like the one ring in The Hobbit or the Lord of The Rings. I say ”no thank you” for the thousandth time! The fact is that Latinos make up about 65% of IFA; I assure you no Nigerian is willing to share real and proportionate power with Latinos. Osun State makes an araba title for Cuba? We Lucumi laugh. Now ICIR wants to sanction our ile and temples; I say, no thank you. Some of the things this council (ICIR) is doing are good, other things are not. No Latinos voted on the leadership of this council that seeks to be in control of our Lucumi and The Diaspora credentials. Latinos I know like a democracy; not a dictatorship. No senior Latinos in our religion we part of this council before Awo Popoola took over it, I assume his omo awo will be on the council; but he is certainly not a senior Lucumi Babalawo. There are Baba Awo like the Chief Olosun ( Adigun Olosun) who have been quiet; other ranking Baba Awo in Nigeria are absent; is the power struggle over? I am not so sure. What I am sure of is that Latinos and other branches of IFA (the 65%) in The Diaspora are being swept under the carpet by the 35% in Nigeria. Nigeria IFA can call itself our mother (500 years ago) just like the Jews can call themselves the mother of Christianity (Jesus was a Jew). Hinduism in India birthed Buddhism too. The point I am making is each of these children grew after birth. None of these other mothers are trying to grab power from their children; each respects their children and gives them independence. Why after 500 years do the Nigerians seek to assimilate us like The Borg on the TV Series Star Trek? Lucumi IFA and other branches of IFA in The

Diaspora have plenty of power and protection at least as much as Nigerian IFA. I repeat, Latinos do not wish to be ruled or colonized by anyone and that includes Nigerians. My final comment is in honor of Esu and balance. We all know many Latinos who have gone to Yoruba Land for ceremony and to study. How many Nigerians visit Cuba for ceremony and to learn Lucumi? Awo Popoola and Ifayemi Elebuibon have at least visited, but they were not in Cuba to study Lucumi or participate in Lucumi ceremony; they were there to promote Yoruba Land IFA. My own Lucumi ile has six Awo who have studied in Yorubaland and participated in various ceremonies; that is just (only) my ile. I cannot think of one Awo from Nigeria who has come to Cuba to learn; perhaps there are some, but the vast majority of the time, it is Nigerians coming to Cuba to promote Yoruba Land IFA. How can Nigerians or the ICIR know their version of IFA is superior if they have not studied all the forms of IFA in The Diaspora?
