Giulio Clovio and the “escuela escurialense” of illumination: new miniatures by Pedro Sánchez de Ezpeleta and the Geronimite friarsThe article discloses an unpublished miniature by Pedro Sánchez de Ezpeleta, which is the milestone for the reconstruction of the activity as miniaturist of the Aragonese artist. Ezpeleta’s artwork is discussed in the context of the scriptorium of El Escorial, where he worked in the service of Philip II. The author reconstructs the history of some illuminations by Geronimite friars from the “Evangelistero Rico”, and he discloses a new illumination by friar Andrés de Leon, found in the Wildenstein Collection at Paris. Finally, he highlights how the “escuela escurialense” of illumination has been influenced by Italian models, and mainly by Giulio Clovio’s works that oncestood in El Escorial and, in particular, he clarifies the provenance of the Holy Family with St. Elizabeth and St. John the Baptist, performed by the miniaturist around 1553, when he was in Florence, and now preserved in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid.Keywords: Giulio Clovio, miniaturists of El Escorial, Wildenstein Collection, Pedro Sánchez de Ezpeleta, Hernando de Ávila.
