En este sentido no hay que olvidar que otros antropólogos neoevolucionistas también realizaron sus propuestas. Morton Fried (1967: 229), por ejemplo, propuso un modelo de evolución social divergente del de Service en cuanto a los estadios, aunque manteniendo su número: la sociedad igualitaria, la de rango, la estratificada y la estatal. Fried definió este último estadio como una sociedad de clases en la que las instituciones, que están por encima de las relaciones de parentesco, son las que marcan el ejercicio del poder.

El espacio de vida por excelencia es el poblado, y dentro de él, es en las casas donde se desarrollaba el trabajo diario, pues ahí estaban el hogar, el horno doméstico, el área de molienda y de tejido y una zona de almacenaje. Las mujeres estarían inmersas en las llamadas tareas de mantenimiento (Curiá et alii, 2000; 2005), es decir, aquellos trabajos dedicados al sostenimiento y bienestar del grupo social. Se trataría de labores relacionadas con la comida que conllevarían no sólo su preparación sino también su almacenaje, a veces en grandes vasos contenedores, además de su reparto y consumo. Seguramente el día comenzaría con la distribución de diferentes tareas como la molienda del cereal para cocinar gachas o almortas, el pastoreo de los rebaños o el cuidado de los niños.

Otra actividad importante en la vida de las mujeres sería tejer. La industria textil nunca se consideró un oficio, existieron talleres unifamiliares situados habitualmente en la entrada de las casas, la zona más iluminada de las viviendas. Se usaba el telar vertical con pesas, donde las pondera actuarían como contrapesas para tensar los hilos. Las fusayolas son el material más abundante relacionado con los tejidos, aunque habitualmente forman parte de los ajuares tanto femeninos como masculinos su uso va unido a la mujer.
