Abstract The purpose of this paper is to explore the implications of Flannery O’Connor’s religious views in her fiction, through the study of selected criticism, her own critical approaches exposed in her essays and occasional prose, and her narrative. The clash of the religious American South and modern secularism is represented as a crossroads between alienation and isolation on the one hand, and a quest, sometimes extreme, for the establishment of values within an increasingly materialistic and changing world. Knowledge of God and oneself (or vision) becomes important as a means to conversion and awareness of the complexity of reality. O'Connor’s work describes a fallen world in which God’s revelations or manifestations either are unnoticed or burst into it violently. Through irony and caricature the author criticizes fake piety and self-righteousness. Within rural contexts, such as the American South, the survival of ancient traditions, the influence of the Bible and the preservation of nature provide the foundation for belief in the supernatural and salvation, functioning as a bastion for the continuity of the common values that define a culture and its identity. Keywords: religion – Bible – fiction – vision – southern El propósito de este artículo es explorar las implicaciones de la visión y creencia religiosas de Flannery O’Connor en su ficción, a través del estudio de críticos seleccionados, los ensayos de la autora y su narrativa. En su obra, el enfrentamiento de la religiosidad sureña estadounidense y el secularismo moderno es representado como el punto de bifurcación entre la alienación y el aislamiento, por una parte; y una búsqueda, a veces estrafalaria, en pos del establecimiento de nuevos valores en el seno de un mundo cada vez más materialista y cambiante. El conocimiento de Dios y uno mismo cobra importancia como un camino hacia la conversión y la conciencia de la complejidad de la realidad. La obra de O’Connor describe un mundo caído en el que las revelaciones o manifestaciones de Dios, o son inadvertidas, o irrumpen violentamente. A través de la ironía y la caricatura la autora critica la falsa piedad y el fariseísmo. En los contextos rurales, como el Sur estadounidense, la supervivencia de tradiciones ancestrales y la preservación de naturaleza abonan la creencia en lo sobrenatural y en la salvación, como reducto para la continuidad de los valores comunes que definen una cultura y su identidad. She is currently researching Kurt Vonnegut’s oeuvre for a PhD in Literature at the same university and has taken part in academic research teams of English Literature and Aesthetics since 2006, studying also the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Flannery O’Connor.
