Electron energy loss spectroscopy Stig Andersson,

Department of Physics, Chalmers Umverslty of Technology, S-412 96 Goteborg, Sweden

High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has during the last decade emerged as a powerful probe of the vibrational states of atoms and molecules adsorbed on sohd surfaces Conceptionwlse, the inelastic electron scattering experiment is qmte simple A colhmated monoenergetlc electron beam is scattered from a crystal surface The electrons scattered into a narrow angular acceptance are energy analysed The objectwe is

to delineate what can be learned about the surface adsorbate system by investigating the energy and angular &strlbutlon of the melastlcally scattered electrons In this talk particular emphasis wdl be given to the knowledge about adsorption site symmetry that can be obtained by investigating the coupling to metal surface phonons via ordered adsorbate lattices
