A fragment (F 32 Snell-Maehler) adscribed to Pindar’s first  Hymn can be understood in the context of a musical performance by Apollo in Thebes, on the occasion of the marriage of Cadmus and Harmonia, or perhaps better –that is what I intend to explore in this paper - in the framework of the oracular consultation in Delphi when Cadmus was told how to found Thebes. In order to explore this, after studying the place and meaning of the fragment in a hypothetical reconstruction of the contents of the Hymn, I focus in the study of the word ὀρθάν (qualifying µουσικὰν), and ponder its possible oracular connotations
