Descripción

The settlement of El Taratrato (Alcañiz, Teruel), excavated almost entirely by Vicente Bardavíu and Pierre Paris in the years1924-25, has been considered, among 20th century archaeological historiography, as paradigm of a central path villagefollowing a model of proto-historic urbanism, characteristic of the Ebro Valley and the East of the Iberian peninsula, which hada main entrance defended by just a tower in the shape of a square. However, the recent works of preservation and consolidationof the structures dug out nearly a century ago, as well as the results of the later ones have confirmed the presence of a muchmore complex defensive system that, in all probability, was formed by other three large towers in the southern area (two of themalready excavated), besides a defensive ditch that seems to be partially well conserved in the West area. It must be added to thesefinds, must be added the presence of some warehousing rooms with small benches plastered with lime or gypsum, and the proofof the previous and later occupations of the Iberian village, including a phase of the Early Iron Age and the continuation of thesettlement in the vicinity to El Taratrato in Roman time.
