ABSTRACT: In this paper we analyze the impactof John Keegan’s seminal book “The Face of Battle”in current academic Ancient Military History,and also the adoption of his approach by amainstream current of historical fiction with anancient military history subject. These are twoways, parallel and divergent at the same time, bywhich military History reaches a wider audience.We discuss if there is a real possibility of describingfaithfully, from any of these alternativeviewpoints, the essential chaos and confusion ofbattle in antiquity. Finally, we briefly discuss howmilitary historical fiction can be used in an academiccontext.
