ACTAS V JORNADAS DE HISTORIA DE ALMENDRALEJORESUMEN: Alonso García Silíceo fue alguacil mayor de Badajoz en una época en la que Extremadura era el principal escenario de la guerra contra Portugal iniciada en 1640. La financiación del ejército y el acopio de las provisiones necesarias para el mantenimiento de la tropa benefició a hombres de negocios que, como Silíceo, adquirieron y después utilizaron los oficios concejiles, además de tejer una extensa red clientelar, con el objetivo de garantizar los suministros y recaudar las rentas en las que estaban situadas sus consignaciones. Esta burguesía financiera ensombreció durante estos años el papel supuestamente predominante de la hidalguía en los municipios extremeños, pero no pudo sustraerse del anhelo de ennoblecerse, lo cual impide considerarla una alternativa de gobierno. The funding of the army and the supply of the necessary provisions for the maintenance of the troop benefited businessmen like Silíceo. These businessmen not only obtained a large network of patronage base, but they also bought positions of councilors and then used them in order to grant supplies and collect the taxes where their allocations were. This financial bourgeoisie overshadowed the supposedly prevailing role played by the nobility in the municipalities of Extremadura, but it could not avoid the desire of becoming part of the aristocracy, which is the reason why it cannot be considered an alternative of government.
