The ecclesiastical career of Rodrigo de Santaella at the papal court during the last quarter of the 15th century developed under the favor of the circle of Carinal Jacopo Ammannati, the confidant and relative of Pope Pius II. This explains why Santaella published the poems to the Virgin. Also the distich engraved on his tombstone is taken from the tomb of his patrón Ammannati, whose testament was the model copied by Santaella. All this demonstrates his ideological adscription to Christian humanism as supported by that humanist Cardinal.
