Descripción

For the Nahuas the ability of communication was one ofthe basic criteria of barbarism and limits of “humanity”projected from an entirely ethnocentric perspective.“Barbarian” and “inhuman” traits, along with ethnonyms, served to construct negative models of membersof the society. This paper shows that ethnic stereotypesregistered in the colonial period in their huge partoriginated in preconquest times, but were extended andsubject to different modifications in response toEuropean ideas and contemporary phenomena.
