Descripción

Edition, translation and commentary of Hidalgo's epitaph, printed in 1604 in his Thesaurus of True Surgery. It was written in a baroque style by his son-in-law, a professor of Medicine at the University of Seville. He erroneously placed the ancient city of Ategua in his home town of Marchena. He might have also composed two elegiac couplets for Hidalgo's portrait, which are also edited and translated here. The structure, classical expression and some contents of the epitaph are based on the epitaph engraved in the Renaissance tomb of Cardinal Mendoza in the Cathedral of Seville a century before. The article also deals with the life and work of Hidalgo (1530-1597), his practical teachings on Surgery, and his new method of immediately healing wounds, based on a commentary by Galen, which is also copied and translated.
